Church leaders from different denominations in Kakamega held prayers at the Muliro Garden to cleanse the grounds because they believe the disgraceful act has dented the image of the much respected tourist garden in the country. The impact of foreign media systems, including television programming, and the impact of social media, especially among the young and urbanised populations, have made it even more difficult to define what our family values really are. That probably explains why there is no real agreement as to what constitutes a family newspaper in our situation. It is used to describe a newspaper that refrains from publishing titillating material such as sex, gossip, and juicy crime stories calculated to attract mass readership. A family newspaper in Britain is contrasted with tabloid newspapers such as The Sun, Daily Mirror, and the now defunct News of the World.
It didn't take long for the complaints to start pouring in after the Star on March 8 ran a photo on Page 3 of a couple engaged "in the act" as the caption put it. The photo was one of two accompanying a story about police efforts to put an end to the use of a park in Kakamega as a place to have sex. One of the earliest came from Amanda Khamati, who wrote: Now there's absolutely nothing wrong with the story. However, the picture of a couple having sex was absolutely unnecessary.
